Own a piece of the Apollo 11 spacecraft that went to the Moon!
The spacecraft which carried astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins to the moon was known as the Command Module and bore the symbolic name “Columbia.” On the outside of the Command Module was a thin layer of material called Kapton Foil, designed to protect the astronauts from the harsh environment of deep space. This frame includes an actual piece of the Kapton Foil that went to the moon and back aboard Apollo 11 in July 1969. Most of the Kapton Foil burned away during reentry, but what survived was often peeled off and kept by members of NASA's recovery crews as a souvenir. This rare Kapton Foil is featured here affixed to an Apollo 11 First Day Cover accompanied by two 8x10 photographs, two Apollo 11 patches and an engraved information nameplate. The source of this Kapton foil which can be seen in numerous photographs on the outside of the command module, is Dick Williamson and Terry Slezak, both NASA engineers who were allowed to keep foil and later resold it. This piece is surrounded by black suede and a gold mat and is held in a classic gold frame. Total size is 16 X 30.
